The Real Gunsmith: Bullet Technology

Bullet Technology was produced for The Real Gunsmith, a YouTube channel I created and managed for custom rifle builder Randy Selby over an 18-month period. The purpose of the channel was to capture Randy’s decades of gunsmithing knowledge and present it directly to an audience interested in rifles, cartridges, ballistics, and hunting.

Randy had no previous on-camera experience when we began working together and was initially uncomfortable with the production process. Rather than forcing him into a conventional presenter style, I developed an approach that worked with his personality. Once the conversation moved into subjects he knew deeply, he became a deliberate and compelling storyteller with strong opinions and a natural ability to hold the attention of viewers seeking detailed information.

Randy developed the subject matter and narrative for this episode while I handled the production and visual presentation. The video was filmed as a two-camera seated interview, with the camera angles selected and cut to support his eyeline, pacing, and delivery. Additional footage of his bullet chart was incorporated at specific points to clarify the technical discussion and visually reinforce the information being presented.

Post-production required working carefully around long pauses, repeated phrases, stutters, and minor interruptions without making the conversation feel unnaturally edited. I used the two camera angles and supporting footage to maintain visual interest while preserving Randy’s slower, thoughtful delivery rather than trying to turn it into a faster style that would not have suited him or his audience.

Final post-production included multi-camera editing, shot selection, B-roll placement, color correction, audio leveling, and final output for YouTube. The completed video has accumulated more than 200,000 views and remains one of the channel’s stronger-performing educational videos.

The channel continued to support Randy’s custom rifle business while also developing an additional source of revenue for him and his wife.
