January 1st, 2018 I decided to take a drive with my camera up the North Fork of the Shoshone River west of Cody, Wyoming, towards the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. The first day of the year couldn't have been better! First on my trip I encountered a Bison Bull just waking from his nap! I watched him wake up an answer nature's call. Pretty entertaining these guys are! Next I found an unfortunate Bull Elk. With an injured back leg he was obviously tired and wet, with other observers informing me he'd been in and out of the water trying to cross to the other side. A friend who lives in the town of Wapiti informed me that the Wyoming Game and Fish arrived and put him out of his misery. Next I found 2 good rams, the bigger ram was the reason I wanted to take the trip. I've been watching this ram for 5 years, last year due to the heavy snow I didn't see him and I was hoping he made it through the last 2 years hunts and he did! This year he looks quite worn down from when I saw him 2 years ago, the rut must have been hard on him, but despite the ragged appearance, he had a spring in his step and showed no signs of slowing down! I hope he survives the winter and comes back for another year, but if this is the last time I see him alive, it was a great way to say goodbye!
