Maverik Kick Start — Television Production Demo Reel

Maverik Kick Start was an adventure-based reality television series that placed everyday participants in challenging outdoor and action-oriented experiences. Produced by the creative team at 8Fish, the program combined entertainment, branded storytelling, and sponsor integration for broadcast television. Production started in 2005 with the series launching in 2008 and aired for three seasons, including broadcasts through KSL in Salt Lake City.

My involvement with the production became the foundation of my professional video career. Over approximately five years at 8Fish, I received intensive on-the-job training in nearly every stage of agency and television production. I began as an assistant to the director and gradually took on greater responsibility as my technical and storytelling skills developed.

In the field, I trained and worked as an audio mixer, grip, B-roll camera operator, and A-, B-, and C-camera operator before progressing into field-producing responsibilities. Each production required working as part of a coordinated crew, following creative direction, anticipating action, framing shots quickly, capturing usable audio, and gathering the visual coverage needed to construct a complete story during post-production.

My pre-production experience included storyboarding, script development, location scouting, production planning, and preparing shot requirements. Because many episodes involved outdoor adventures and unpredictable situations, the team needed enough structure to capture the planned story while remaining flexible when events changed in the field.

My post-production responsibilities included ingesting and cataloging footage, developing rough edits, shaping story edits, assembling individual television segments, completing final edits, correcting color and audio, and preparing finished programs for delivery. At the time, broadcast delivery involved both digital and analog formats, requiring close attention to each station’s technical and runtime specifications.

Working within a medium-scale creative agency and television crew also taught me the less visible parts of production: accepting and implementing creative direction, communicating with directors and crew members, giving clear direction when needed, solving problems under field conditions, and understanding how each production role contributes to the finished program.

This reel represents selected work from that period and the practical training that established the production, camera, editing, and storytelling skills I have continued to use throughout my career.

My roles included: Production assistant, field audio mixer, grip, camera operator, field producer, pre-production planning, storyboarding, script development, location scouting, footage organization, story editing, segment editing, color correction, audio finishing, and broadcast delivery.

This reel contains selected footage from productions completed as part of the 8Fish television team. My responsibilities varied by episode and included the roles described above. I edited this reel for a portfolio piece.
