Long Range Pursuit: The Nevada Mule Deer Challenge

Unlike a scripted commercial production, filming a hunt requires planning around a story that cannot be fully predicted. Before production, I worked with the Gunwerks salesman serving as the on-camera talent, along with the outfitter and guide, to establish a loose narrative plan, identify important moments, and prepare the shot angles and scripted segments that needed to be captured in the field.

I served as field producer and primary camera operator throughout the five-day Nevada mule deer hunt. Production used three cameras—a Canon DSLR, a Sony video camera, and a GoPro—along with wireless lavalier microphones to capture dialogue and natural audio. My role was to document the hunt as it developed while gathering enough coverage, interviews, transitions, and supporting footage to build a complete television story afterward.

Following the hunt, I ingested and cataloged footage from all three cameras and developed the episode storyline from the material captured on location. The story was structured into four television segments and edited to meet the different runtime and delivery requirements of Pursuit Channel, Wild TV, and Sportsman Channel.

Once the rough edit was complete, the Gunwerks salesman and I reviewed the episode together. I incorporated revisions, tightened the story to meet strict broadcast time limits, and preserved the most important moments without losing the pace or clarity of the hunt.

Final post-production included color correction, audio leveling, caption-file creation, and separate exports prepared to each network’s technical specifications. The entire post-production process required approximately 100 hours.

The footage was later repurposed for the Gunwerks YouTube channel in three different lengths, allowing the same production to support television broadcast, digital marketing, and online audience growth.

My role: Field producing, production planning, camera operation, multi-camera coverage, location audio, media ingest and cataloging, story development, scriptwriting, broadcast editing, review coordination, color correction, audio leveling, caption creation, multi-network delivery, and YouTube adaptations.
